Either in  written,  oral,  or  visual  form,  literature  challenges  readers  to  identify,  examine,

Four types of literature
There are different kinds or forms of literature. We see them every day in the form of
different reading materials. Here are some of the different kinds of literature that are familiar
to most people.

Poetry writing
Poetry writing is one form of literature that we study in school. We are familiar with poemsthat rhyme but some poems do not need to rhyme. It is described as language in its mostconcentrated form. Some poems are meant to be read aloud to appreciate its content.

Folktales
Folktales are the stories that belong to one culture. These stories are traditional and have been
passed down from generations. These folktales reflect the history, culture, beliefs and
customs of the people. Examples of folktales are the fairy tales, myths and legends.

Drama:
Drama is also a form of literature even if it is made to be played by actors and actresses infront of the audiences. Creating drama or play should have dialogs and plots. These are the main parts that are needed in a drama. One of the most well known plays or drama is Romeo and Juliet wn`tten by William Shakespeare.

Autobiography is also a very famous form of literature especially if the author is well known or an important personality and has an interesting life experience. The author is writing about himself or herself.

Prose

Prose is usually short story, essay or novel. It is the use of language in order to create characters, plots, places and events. It is constructing your own story and presenting it to the readers.

These are just some of the forms of literature that we recognize. There are many other forms and kinds of literature but these are the ones that we usually encounter.

The main difference between the different forms of literature is the purpose and the
way words are arranged.

The main difference between prose and poetry is how the words are used In prose we form words into sentences and paragraphs. In poetry we form words into lines and stanzas. Many of the mies of punctuation and grammar apply to poetry, but the poet can choose to change
them as he or she wishes. Here is an example from ee Cummings.

Somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose

You can see that the poet uses words differently than typical sentences. He does not capitalize, and does not even put spaces between the words (“travelled, gladly”). By doing this, he reinforces the tone and message of his poem, about the facts of life.

Poetry speaks directly to emotions. It seeks to eliminate as many barriers as possible between the poem and the reader. There is a little more distance in prose. Prose consists of novels and drama It is basically wn`ting like human speech.

The difference between drama and novels is the purpose and the structure. Drama is written to be performed It can consist of prose or be more like poetry, such as Shakespeare. It is composed of stage directions, speaker tags, and lines. Here is an example from the play The

Mr. Frank (quickly controlling himself ). Yes, Miep, yes.

Miep. Everyone in the office has gone home. It’s after six. (Then, pleading) Don’t stay up

A play is meant to be performed, and not just read The stage directions tell the actors what
to do, but also describe the action of the play and how the lines will be delivered

A novel, on the other hand, is a story written in paragraphs. It includes the narration, as well
as dialogue. Here is an example from To Kill a Mockingbird

“Teach me? ” I said in surprise. “He hasn’t taught me anything, Miss Caroline. Atticus ain’t
got time to teach me anything,” I added, when Miss Caroline smiled and shook her head
“Why, he’s so tired at night he just sits in the livingroom and reads.” (ch 2)

This excerpt shows dialogue, action, and how the character felt. By using this genre, we can tell a fuller story than poetry or drama There is more detail, and characters and events are more fleshed-out. This genre is more character driven, where drama is more plot driven and characterization is accomplished through action.

What is personification?
Personification is a figure of  speech in  which  a thing,  an idea or an animal is given human
attributes.  The non-‘human objects  are  portrayed in  such  a  way  that  we feel  they  have  the
ability to act like human beings
For example, when we say, “The sky weeps” we are giving the sky the ability to cry, which is
a human quality. Thus, we can say that the sky has been personified in the given sentence.
Cummun Examples uf Personification
Look at my car. She is a beauty, isn’t it so?
The wind whispered through dry grass.
The flowers danced in the gentle breeze.

We  see from  the above examples of  personification that this literary  device helps us  relate

  1. What is a hyperbole? Support your answer with two examples.

Ans:
A hyperbole is an extreme exaggeration used to make a point. It is like the opposite of

“understatement ” It is from a Greek word meaning “excess.” Hyperboles can be found in
literature and oral communication. They would not be used in nonfiction works, like medical
journals or research papers but, they are perfect for fictional works, especially to add color to
a character or humor to the story.

Hyperboles are comparisons, like similes and metaphors, but are extravagant and even
ridiculous. A boring story can come to life or become comical with the use of a hyperbole.

For example:

  1. I am so hungry I could eat a horse.
  2. You could have knocked me over with a feather.

ii. Now go to page 57, exercise 2 of your textbook. You are asked to underline the hyperbole used in each sentence and write what that particular hyperbole conveys. i. Who is Jane Eyre and what kind of childhood did she have?

Ans:
Jane Eyre is a young orphan being raised by Mrs~ Reed, her cruel, wealthy aunt~ A servant named Bessie provides Jane with some of the few kindnesses she receives, telling her stories and singing songs to her.

“‘I am not your dear; I cannot lie down: send me to school soon, Mrs. Reed, for I hate to live here.”‘ (Bronte 60) Jane had an extememly bad childhood . She was orphaned at a very young age, and can hardly even remember her true parents. Her uncle took her into his home and was kind to her, but then he died soon after, adding another tradegdy to her life. Jane was then in the care of her aunt, Mrs. Reed Mrs. Reed mostly ignored Jane, and when she was not ignoring her, she punished Jane for her pressumed bad behavior. John, Mrs. Reed’s son, physically abused Jane without provocation. Jane was mentally and physically abused throughout her childhood Until Jane went to Lochwood School, her life was horrid Though even after she had people that cared about her, she was malnourished at school.
